U.S. college application platforms include the Common Application, Coalition Application, QuestBridge, and several state-specific systems.

Common Application, Coalition Application, and QuestBridge serve as the shared platforms across hundreds of institutions.

Meanwhile, the UC Application, Cal State Apply, ApplyTexas, and applySUNY operate as separate state-specific systems. Most students end up using more than one platform, depending on which schools are on their list.

Common App, Coalition, and QuestBridge Explained

Common Application

Common App is accepted by more than 1,000 colleges and universities in the U.S. and internationally. One application covers personal information, academic history, extracurricular activities, recommendation letters, and a Personal Essay (up to 650 words). School-specific supplement questions are completed separately for each institution within the same account.

The platform includes the majority of private colleges and a number of selective public universities, including UVA and UNC. Institutions that do not accept Common App include the UC system, UT Austin, University of Washington Seattle, MIT, and the U.S. service academies.

Coalition Application

The Coalition Application consists of approximately 150 member colleges, including all eight Ivy League universities, selected based on criteria such as accessibility, affordability, and graduation rates. The structure a common profile plus school-specific supplement questions runs parallel to Common App.

A Digital Locker feature allows students to store and organize application materials from 9th grade onward. Many institutions accept both Common App and Coalition; applicants choose one or the other.

QuestBridge Application

QuestBridge is a nonprofit program for high-achieving students from lower-income households. Through the National College Match, eligible students are considered for full-scholarship placements covering tuition, room, and board at approximately 50 partner institutions, including Ivy League universities and selective liberal arts colleges.

Eligibility is based on household income and academic achievement. Students selected as Finalists can submit the same application for Regular Decision consideration at partner schools if no match is awarded.

FAQ About U.S. College Application Platforms

Q. How many platforms do most students use?

It depends on the school list. Two platforms in parallel is the most common setup — Common App as the primary system, with one state-specific platform (UC Application, ApplyTexas, Cal State Apply, or applySUNY) added where needed. Students who qualify for QuestBridge may use three or more simultaneously.

Q. Can students apply to UC campuses through Common App?

No.

UC Berkeley, UCLA, and all 9 UC campuses require the UC Application (separate account). Common App and Coalition are not accepted.

Q. Is QuestBridge available to all students?

No.

QuestBridge requires household income eligibility (typically U.S. median income or below) + top academic performance. Only Finalists can use the application for National College Match.
